The Kenyah traditionally carry their babies in a rattan plaited carrier with wooden base and some baby carrier made of wood. These baby carriers are decorated with multicolored beaded panels of spirit figured, dragon, leopards and hornbills. Ancient glass beads and amulets of bear-claws or leopard's fangs add to decorate the carrier.
Those days our people believed that these spiritual protection of the baby carried within. But nowadays, people make carrier mostly for decorations. There are no longer original bear-claws or leapard fangs use, but all are made of plastic. Some of our old folks still prefer to carry small baby using this carrier at home.
My mother have few baby carriers for sale at the moment. If you are interested, you may e-mail me at mlcecilia@gmail.com for more information.
I seek to ensure that the Kenyah and Sa'ban people maintain their cultural and traditional heritage as reflected through their dances, costumes and music. This is just one facet of the rather complex yet fascinating challenge awaiting me.
